7-week Intro to Midwifery & Doula Certification Course

Our Intro to Midwifery Course will cover:

Week 1
- A brief history of Midwifery
- Explain different care providers for birth
- Introduce the body parts and how they work

Week 2
- Discuss midwifery character and heart
- Intro to theology  & philosophy of midwifery

Week 3
- Overview of pregnancy care & nutrition

Week 4
- Explain normal birth, comfort skills, midwife monitoring skills and equipment

Week 5 - 6
-Introduce the most common and also rare but important to know birth complications, interventions, and medicines

Week 7 
- Overview of postpartum care, breastfeeding, and newborn care
- Next steps in how to become a midwife

 

Upon completion of all sessions of the 7-week course, you will receive a Certificate of Completion which will be needed for doula certification with GEM and/or for access to enroll in the GEM Midwifery Academy.

This course is designed to give a more detailed basis of knowledge to doulas and midwifery students and help women get a taste of all that being a midwife entails to help them decide if they want to become a midwife (and how to do that if they do want to)! This is our foundational 7-week course required both for GEM doula certification as well as prerequisite for enrollment in the GEM Midwifery Academy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is this course?

In-person it takes 7 weeks, we meet every Thursday from 3pm-7pm, for a total of 7 four-hour class sessions.

The online Intro to Midwifery consists of 7 modules with 2 classes and assignments each, you can work through faster than 7 weeks if you prefer and are able to! You are able to unlock the next week's content after completing the homework for each week.

Do I get a certificate at the end of the course?

There will be a homework reading and assignment after each class session. The assignments must be completed each week in order to receive the course completion certificate at the end of the course. We will permit you all to miss ONE class session and still receive course completion as long as the homework is completed for the missed class session.

Is there a difference in cost between taking the Intro to Midwifery in person or online, and does it include any hands-on training?

The price is the same online as it is in person. The Intro to Midwifery course does not include hands-on training, only the doula workshop has hands-on.
